UniWide set up guide for Mobile Devices

This is a general guide on how to setup mobile devices such as PDAs and Smartphones for wireless access.

Devices Covered:

  • 802.11a/b/g compatible mobile devices
  • Mobile devices that are capable of WPA security
If you are connecting a laptop, you should refer to the specific guides on the UniWide home page

Access via WPA-Enterprise Authentication

If you have a mobile device that supports WPA-Enterprise with PEAP authentication, you should configure it with the settings below before you connect. This includes Apple iPhones and iPod Touches using iPhone 2.0 software.

Some mobile devices may not require configuration and use the correct settings by default, only prompting you for a username and password.

Note: Many handheld mobile devices (including Apple's first generation iPhones and iPod Touches that have not been updated with iPhone 2.0 software) do not support WPA-Enterprise wireless security. They should instead use the WPA-Personal & Web Authentication instructions further on.

WPA-Enterprise authentication
SSID / Network Name:uniwide
Wireless Security:WPA-Enterpriseor WPA2-Enterprise (more secure but may not work on legacy clients)
EAP Method:PEAP
Key Type/Encryption Cipher:TKIP or AES-CCMP(more secure but may not work on legacy clients)
Phase2 Type:MSCHAPv2
Identity/Username:Staff/Student ID(e.g. z1234567)
Password:Your UniPass password

WPA-Enterprise set up instructions

These instructions cover iPhones/iPod Touches that have the iPhone 2.0 (or higher) software update applied.

1. Ensure that wireless is enabled on the device
If you have an iPhone, you can check under Settings > Wi-Fi.

2. Select the 'UniWide' Network
If you have an iPhone, the easiest way is to open Settings > Wi-Fi, wait until the iPhone detects the wireless networks in range and then choose uniwide. When prompted for a username and password, you should enter your staff/student number (eg. z1234567) and UniPass respectively. Then press the 'Join' button.

3. Verify the certificate
On the iPhone, click on the 'Accept' button to verify the certificate.

You should now be fully connected to the 'uniwide' wireless network.

Access via WPA-Personal & Web Authentication

Most new mobile devices that support 802.11 wireless access also support WPA wireless security and have a built-in web browser. Users of these mobile devices should be able to access the wireless network using the settings below:

WPA-Personal + Web-authentication
SSID / Network Name:uniwide_webauth
Wireless Security:WPA-Personal
WPA Pre-shared-key:UNSW2wireless
Key Type/Encryption Cipher:TKIP
Identity/Username:Staff/Student ID(e.g. z1234567)
Password:Your UniPass password

WPA-Personal/Web-Auth set up instructions

References to the iPhone below refer to the first generation iPhone/iPod Touch that does not have the iPhone 2.0 software update applied.

1. Ensure that wireless is enabled on the device
If you have an iPhone, you can check under Settings > Wi-Fi Networks.

2. Configure for the 'uniwide_webauth' wireless network
If you have an iPhone, the easiest way is to open Settings > Wi-Fi Networks, wait until the iPhone detects the wireless networks in range and then choose uniwide_webauth. When prompted for a password, you should enter UNSW2wireless. Take care to match the upper and lower case of this password.

3. Launch a web-browser on the device
On an iPhone for example, launch Safari and attempt to open a website (e.g. http://www.unsw.edu.au). At this point you will be re-directed to the Web Authentication webpage https://10.10.10.10/login.html. You should enter your staff/student ID (e.g. z1234567) and UniPass, then click 'Submit'.

You should now be fully connected to the 'uniwide_webauth' wireless network.
Your mobile device should remember the uniwide_webauth configuration settings but you will need to authenticate via the Web Authentication web page every time you connect.

Note: Connections to the uniwide_webauth service are designed to time out after 30 minutes of inactivity . When this occurs you will need to re-connect to the service.
